Khmer Rouge first verdict

On Monday 26 July 2010 at 11.07am (NZT) Cambodias United Nations-backed war crimes tribunal sentenced the first Khmer Rouge official to 35 years imprisonment for crimes against humanity.

CCNZ was interviewd by Belinda M Cammon at Radio New Zealand. The topic was the first Khmer Rouge prisoner commander verdict on Monday 26 July 2010. Many questions and issues were brought up including - What do we think about the trial? What the verdict will mean for the community here? Does the Cambodian community care about what the verdict will be?

Prison commander Kaing Guek Eav, better known as "Duch" is charged with war cromes and crimes against humanity as well as murder and torture. He is the first of five senior Cambodian Khmer Rouge leaders to stand trial for his part in the genocide committed in the 1970s. More than 1.7 million people (a quarter of Cambodia's population) died by starvation, disease, torture and execution.

A CCNZ representative was interviwed on Cambodias Hang Meas Radio - Live FM104.5 Mhz. On live air at 17.30 by Mr Sam Nob (Production manager) and  another radio presenter to congratulate Preah Vihear Temple's status as a UNESCO World Heritage site in the second  anniversary (listed on Tuesday 07 July 2008 as a UNESCO’s World Heritage site)

Situated on the edge of a plateau that dominates the plain of Cambodia, the Temple of Preah Vihear is dedicated to Shiva. The Temple is composed of a series of sanctuaries linked by a system of pavements and staircases over an 800 metre long axis and dates back to the first half of the 11th century AD. Nevertheless, its complex history can be traced to the 9th century, when the hermitage was founded. This site is particularly well preserved, mainly due to its remote location. The site is exceptional for the quality of its architecture, which is adapted to the natural environment and the religious function of the temple, as well as for the exceptional quality of its carved stone ornamentation.

The memories of some of the different refugee

Letter from Sarah Hunt, National Refugee Resettlement Coordinator
Refugee Quota Branch Immigration New Zealand

Hello Sarath
Immigration New Zealand would like to produce a small booklet looking at the history of the Mangere Refugee Resettlement Centre (MRRC).

It has changed a lot in the 28 years since you came and with this booklet Immigration hopes to capture the memories of some of the different refugee groups that have been through MRRC over the years. We are looking at nine refugee communities and would like to talk to one family from each.  It would involve a journalist visiting the family in their home, at a time convenient to the family.  They would be asked 3-4 questions about their time at MRRC and a photographer would take a family photo.  The interview comments and photo would feature in the booklet which would be distributed to various non-government and government groups in time for World Refugee Day on 20 June.

CCNZ had asked Mr Say Soeurn and his family to represent Cambodians and provide the above information to Sarah Hunt for World Refugee Day. CCNZ would like to thank Mr Soeurn for his assistance.

To inform all Cambodians in New Zealand, Australia and other countries.

CCNZ has been asked by bosbaPANH team to inform Khmer communities living in New Zealand, and Australia to watch young artist bosbaPANH, who is a soprano singer at aged 12. Recently she had a very beautiful, and successful concert 2 weeks ago in Chaktomuk Hall (Phnom Penh) where 1000 people attened in a theatre which has only 600 seats. More than 100 musicians performed on the night. Bosbapanh sings songs from Sin Sisamout, and King Father Norodom Sihanouk but also an international repertoire such as "La Vie en Rose", "Summertime", Liang Zhu (Chinese), Sa Ugoy Ng Duyan (Philippines). I think both the old and new generations of Australian Khmer would like the concert.

To watch or learn more about bosbaPANH go to www.bosbapanh.com
